CliviaNet: Import/Export

Sending and Receiving Seeds and Plants

The Clivia business and hobby is an international affair. We need to be aware of the rules and regulations that govern exporting and importing living plant materials and seeds. We will try to cover that here in a very limited and strictly unofficial way.

The main concern will be the documentation required for plants and seeds to come into a country from outside the borders. Here are a few generalities:

Clean plants and seeds are absolutely required.
There must not be any soil on the plant or its roots.
There must not be any rotten or decaying plant material in the package.

Proper identification at Genus and species level.
The botanical name must appear on the plants in the package.
E.g. Clivia miniata

Customs declaration.
The nature of the materials must be stated clearly: "Clivia seed"
List the botanical names (Genus and species) for each variety of plant on the individual seed packets.

Phytosanitary Certificate.
Required for all plants and bulbs.
Required for all seeds being shipped into the U.S.A.

Your plants and seeds are valuable, to you in any case. Do not put them at risk by ignoring the rules for importing plants into your country.

A list of a few countries with what else may be known of their import regulations follows.
