Starting Clivia Seeds in Arid Climates

Part 3

Hi out there !!!! It is so silent in the group, you can hear the proverbial pin drop. Just to wake you enclosed some photos, old hat to the initiated but of some interest to the starters. I planted 24 caulescens seeds on 03/11/01 and they were idling along, we had a bit of a hot spell lately and I had not checked them for a week, wow they are crying out to be transplanted. All 24 germinated.

I plant in this case a 12cm square pot, just on some potting soil ex nurseries, no cooking, microwaving etc. I sprinkle some coarse gravel round the seeds to prevent them rolling about, wet thoroughly, put in plastic freezer bag and close with a clothes peg. And wait. They often germinate in 3- 4 wks at the moment. The whole lot gets put into a proverbial hole in the ground, that I had when I was germinating cacti and succulents. It is about 4 meters by 1.5 meters. Built up brick wall, about 30 cms deep, covered by fibre glass sheets. And forget about them they stay constant temp, and moisture.

Keep planting
Regards, Loukie
