-- adapted from the History of the Shields Family by Benjamin F. Shields
Uncle Ben was the de facto patriarch of the family when he was alive. He lived on a farm in Franklin township. As well as being a farmer, he was a former school teacher, so he was also the best-educated member of the family. I remember him as a white haired, soft-spoken old gentleman who walked with a cane or crutches and spent his days sitting in his easy chair looking out the living room window.
There were two "Benjamin Franklin Shields" in the family when Uncle Ben was younger. One had dark hair, while Uncle Ben had red hair; so the one was call "Black Ben" and Uncle Ben was "Red Ben."
