Jim Shields' Greenhouse Benches - Legs

Construction of sturdy plant benches depends on having sturdy legs and bracing.

Legs for bench The legs are 30 inches long, made from redwood 2 X 4 lumber. Be sure the legs are free from large knots and knotholes. The leg pieces are given a first coat of paint or stain before attachment to the bench.
Diagonal Brace for Leg Two braces are used for the top of each leg. These diagonal braces prevent lateral swaying. Note that each individual piece is given its first coat of paint or stain before the leg is assembled. Redwood is relatively rot resistant, but cut ends of redwood lumber are prime sites for the start of rot.
Legs and bracing The top of each leg is attached to the 2 X 4 framework of the deck and then the braces are installed. When the legs and braces are all installed, give the underside of the deck and the legs and braces a second coat of paint or stain.
