This species is not rare in the southwestern part of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Haemanthus pubescens pubescens
The inflorescence is characterized by the heavy, upright bracts or spathe valves. It is variable, and the bracts may be short than or longer than the flowers themselves. Color is characteristically red.
Haemanthus pubescens pubescens Berries
The fruit tend to be few, with a single huge seed in each white or light pink berry.
Haemanthus pubescens pubescens Leaves
The leaves of this subspecies are always hairy on the upper or adaxial surface. The leaves are also flat and dark green on the upper surface while light green below.
Haemanthus pubescens pubescens Bulb
The bulb of this subspecies is quite unique in the genus: The scales are yellow! This is the only subspecies of pubescens that normally forms offsets.
