Submitted by: Marifran here in Goshen, CT Zone 5, Region 4 Here are my hardy evergreens. My Zone 5 is really more like Zone 4 most years too. The evergreens always have foliage damage in the spring but they rapidly grow out of it. And these listed have never had spring sickness here. I will be interested in the results of your survey. I still prefer the dormants because they don't look as messy in the spring. But if we have a cold spring, which we usually do, by the time I get outside, the evs are beginning to grow out of the damaged foliage. Submitted by Ian Sanderson, Zone 3: These plants have been with me in Edmonton, Zone 3, for three or more years. I don't mulch anything, but generally we get a foot or so of consistent snow cover. We have had a couple winters recently where there was no snow til about New Year's; no significant losses. Not all these plants are suitable for our short season and cold nights. Currently about 150 of my thousand odd hems are registered as EV; a number are not old enough to assess. ALEC ALLEN, 26 EM 5.5 EV '82 CARPENTER K. Submitted by Maurice Dow, Zone 5: We list quite a few evergreens in our Irish Lilyput Daylily catalogue. I'm not sure if you have received a copy. In any case these are some of the cultivars that have grown in our zone 5 garden.I will probably be able to add greatly to the list as I have close to a 100 that I have only had for two years and will be able to check their hardiness this spring. Two things to note; the breeder may find that a particular variety is evergreen in their garden in the southern US and we find that in fact it is a dormant in our climate. The other is that many dormants and semi-evergreens are not hardy in our climate. We find that daylilies should always be planted in the spring in our climate. This is especially true for the evergreens. Submitted by Julie Gridley, Zone 3-4: Sorry this is so late, but I simply didn't have time to contribute to this poll till after Easter. Anyway, here's a list of evergreens that have survived for me up here at the border of zones 3 and 4 in central Wisconsin. I actually didn't have as many evergreens as I thought - but almost all the ones I do have are doing fine. Several are Munson's, however, and he was known for breeding hardy evergreens. I have more trouble with many of the semi-evergreens I have. Maybe that will be the subject of a future poll! Thanks for your work on this one. BENCHMARK BEST KEPT SECRET CEE TEE FRANK GLADNEY (I hesitate to add this one because others have written that it is tender for them in even warmer zones than mine. I've only had it a few years and so far, so good - but perhaps a bad winter would do it in) FRENCH PAVILION JOAN SENIOR KECIA MING PORCELAIN SALZBURG TRUDY HARRIS |

Submitted by Joan Messer, Zone 3: I hope that all of these are registered as evergreen ... I used Eureka and catalogues of the hybridizers where I could. AUGUST MORN (J. Carpenter) I had this one for several years and it's wonderful. It also opens very well even on cool mornings. I added it's sibling SEASIDE SUNRISE last year and it looks like it's just as vigorous. LONG STOCKING (P. Stamile) I planted this one in 1998 and it's the first daylily to start growing in the spring and absolutely the last one around in the fall. It's foliage appears to be very resistant to frost. DIZZY DOTS (R. Mercer) This one was planted in the fall of 1997 and I was a little nervous about it's survival chances, but it has proven to be very hardy. ROMEO IS BLEEDING (T. Petit) Planted a couple of years ago, this one is doing well. It does like warmer mornings to open well though. PASSION DISTRICT (B. Carr) Planted just last fall, but it's up and growing vigorously. GERDA BROOKER (M. Morss) Planted last spring and it looks great this spring. RAGS TO RICHES (B. Carr) Planted last spring as well, has increased and looks very healthy this year. EZEKIEL (Talbott) I've had this one 2 or 3 years now. Grows very well and increases nicely. TROPICAL EXPERIENCE (P. Stamile) This one was planted in 1998 and handles my extreme temperatures very well. ROSY SCENARIO (J. Weston) Planted last fall and looks great. LINDA DANIEL (D. Kirchhoff) Planted last spring and it's doing wonderfully. It bloomed last year, tried to re-bloom and has increased. MINSTREL'S DAUGHTER (T. Petit) Planted last year. This one was up way ahead of most, frost at night didn't bother it all. Nice increase as well. DESTINED TO SEE (L. Grace) Planted last spring ...... this one has quite a story behind it, but the end result is that it can put adversity behind it (I usually can kill most things if I set my mind to it!) and survive my winter. Now 4 fans! EARLY TO BED (M. Kaskel) Once again this is a new one for me. Although it didn't bloom last year, it's thriving now ...... excellent foliage. QUOTE THE RAVEN (T. Petit) I've had this one for a couple of years. It really came into it's own last year. I find that some take a year or two to adjust. BROWN EYED GIRL (D. Kirchhoff) This is definitely a hardy one from David Kirchhoff. Winter doesn't seem to bother it at all. WILDEST DREAMS (J. Temple) Planted last spring, didn't bloom but there was excellent increase and the fans look in excellent shape. EXPANDING UNIVERSE (T. Petit) This one is my kind of color ..... has cinnamon in it! It looks great this spring. SUNSHINE AMBER (Sellers) Once again my kind of colors ... good increase and good foliage. COBALT DAWN (P. Stamile) Planted last spring, bloomed and tried to rebloom as well. It increased and looks great this spring. ROUGE AND LACE (M. Kaskel) Planted last year. This spring the fans are small, but I haven't given up hope as it often takes some plants a year or two to settle in and adjust. GLADYS CAMPBELL (T. Petit) A double that I've had for a couple of years. The fans look fat and husky this spring. CALAIS (W. Munson) I like this one! Planted last year and it's up and doing great this spring. Foliage looks good and there was increase. DRIPPING WITH GOLD (T. Petit) Planted in 1999, doing well, but not quite as vigorous as some of the others. Perhaps it needs more time. FREQUENT COMMENT (J. Rice) Acquired in 1998. I divided it to share last year and I see it's coming up this spring with increase. LEROY (D. Kirchhoff) Planted in the spring of 1999. Nice hot color! Looks great this spring. ALL FIRED UP (P. Stamile) Planted last year. How can you tell what colors I like! Bloomed and increase for this spring as well. ETERNITY'S SHADOW (T. Petit) A little slower to start in the spring, but it does catch up to the rest and looks great. CARIBBEAN DOUBLE CINNAMON (Talbott) I've had this one 3 years now I think. It's consistently double and the color is what pleases me especially. CALYPSO SUNSET (T. Petit) I know I keep saying I don't like doubles, but here's another one that I do like. Not a fast increaser, but the plant always looks good in the spring. SECRET SPLENDOR (J. Salter) I've had this one for 3 or 4 years. Increase is slow, but it looks terrific in bloom. I like it! I guess you can't have it all in Zone 3! |
